Introduction to Moving Walkways

Moving walkways are fixed, electrically driven devices with circulating (slab or belt) walkways used to transport passengers horizontally or at an angle of inclination not exceeding 12°. Moving walkways are suitable for places with high pedestrian traffic, such as stations, docks, shopping malls, airports, exhibition halls, and stadiums.

They appeared in the early 20th century. Their conveying length can reach 500 meters when horizontal or slightly inclined, and the conveying speed is generally 0.5 m/s, with a maximum of 0.75 m/s. Moving walkways and their surroundings, especially near the comb plates, should have sufficient lighting. The illuminance of the ground at the entrances and exits of indoor or outdoor moving walkways should be at least 50 lx or 15 lx, respectively [1]. The structure is similar to that of escalators, mainly consisting of moving surfaces and handrails.
